The Modern Meditation Teacher Training (MMTT) is an industry-leading 5-month, 200-hour Mindfulness-Based Meditation Teacher Training Program. Why This Training

The Modern Meditation Teacher Training (MMTT) is a ‘modern-day forward’ training in mindfulness meditation facilitation and meditation career creation.

The training is designed for mindfulness meditation practitioners who have seen the benefits of the practice in their own lives and would like to learn how to share their practice with others in modern settings and in the contemporary vernacular.

Meet Amanda

  • Amanda Gilbert, MMTT Director

    Amanda Gilbert is a meditation teacher, speaker, Professor of Mindfulness at the University of Southern California, and author of Kindness Now: A 28-Day Guide to Living With Authenticity, Intention & Compassion. She is a published scientific author, presently collaborating on mindfulness-based intervention research at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Previously, she was Director of The Aging Metabolism & Emotions Center at UCSF, conducting clinical research on mindfulness and meditation. Her formal training is with UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center, Deepak Chopra, and the Insight Meditation tradition. Amanda has led meditation for dozens of companies, including NBC, Paramount, W Hotels, Merrill Lynch, Macy’s and YouTube. She's a top silicon-valley content creator & writer, developing content for mobile apps, sleep products and meditation devices. As a meditator for over two decades and a full-time meditation teacher, writer and scientific published author, Amanda is uniquely positioned to guide a new generation of teachers to share meditation in multidisciplinary settings and for modern audiences.

  • Matthew Goodman, PHD

    Science of Meditation

    Matthew is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and recent Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Where his research focuses on the relationship between central and autonomic nervous system functioning and how practices such as meditation and biofeedback facilitate cognitive, emotional, and physiological homeostasis. Matthew provides consultation to USC stakeholders on mindfulness, self-compassion, and other stress-reduction practices.

  • Michael Krass

    Trauma-Informed Mindfulness

    Michael Krass is a writer, teacher, and longtime “sitter” with extensive experience in meditation and mindfulness practice. Through his writing and teaching, Michael is committed to the idea of presenting personal, practical, and adaptable ways of bringing awareness to your life through insightful meditation, fearless presence, and wild creativity and never, ever selling yourself short. He currently teaches private clients and offers classes as part of the University of Southern California’s Mindful USC program.

The Program

Monthly Daylong Trainings

Our monthly daylong training sessions with Amanda and Faculty will include lectures, small breakout sessions, group interactivity exercises, guided meditation facilitation examples and opportunities to build community and connection with your fellow trainees during one-on-one work and Q&A. All trainings are recorded and available for life-time playback and revisiting.

Monthly Coursework

The MMTT Three-Module Curriculum is organized into self-paced monthly reading, writing and practice assignments. All monthly coursework is available on the online Training HomePage.

Modern Applications

Learn essential modern meditation teaching applications such as trauma-informed mindfulness techniques, DEIB training and cultural sensitivity to skillfully facilitate mindfulness practice in a variety of settings.

Monthly Group Mentoring

Monthly group mentoring sessions with Amanda and the Faculty will address your personal questions and foster growth in key areas of meditation facilitation and the four foundations of mindfulness. Mentoring includes small group and one-on-one work and relational community-building practice. All group mentoring sessions are recorded and available for lifetime playback.

Weekly Meditation Classes

Participate in weekly 1-hour meditation classes with Amanda and other senior teachers on the Modern Medi Club. Trainees will deepen their personal meditation practice while observing facilitation techniques and strategies. During Modules 2 and 3, there will be an optional ‘Teaching Lab’ to discuss questions and observations from the class.

Graduate Community

As an MMTT Graduate, you will have lifetime access to your MMTT program training materials and ongoing support in the Graduate Community. With business and continued teaching development resources, along with monthly mentoring meet-ups, you will always have a home base with MMTT.

Individual Mentoring

During every module, you will have one-on-one mentoring with Amanda where an individual path is created to achieve your specific teaching, practice and mindful business goals. Personalized next steps will be established and revisited during each individual mentoring session. Individual questions will be addressed, and personalized feedback will be offered.

Practice Development

The deepening of personal daily meditation practice and study ship in the classical four foundations of mindfulness and Buddhist philosophy is an inherent part of MMTT. Nurture and cultivate your personal practice and mindful lifestyle practice across ethical and relational mindful living teachings.

Certification Assignments

To support your preparation to be an effective, competent and impactful meditation teacher in today’s world, you will have both practicum and curriculum final assignments that will ready you to teach.

Peer-to-Peer Small Groups

Monthly Mindfulness Small Pods are practice groups with 2-3 other cohort members and are organized to practice facilitation and receive peer feedback.

Practicum & Observation

Three Practice Meditation Classes on the Modern Medi Club (MMC) and a Final 30-Minute Teaching Class Assignment will foster and demonstrate your growing facilitaiton skill set. Feedback will be given by peers and Faculty after the Final 30-Minute Teaching Class. Part of the Practicum is observing MMTT Faculty and Graduates deliver Introductory Meditation Classes.

Job Placement on MMC*

One of the most valuable aspects of the MMTT course structure is that those who graduate with full certification status and show excellence during their MMTT program are invited to teach on The Modern Medi Club, a donation-based online meditation platform for the public and free to access from around the world. *invitation based on final Faculty assessment.

  • To graduate the program, you must meet the following two prerequisites.

    1. You have a 1+ year consistent meditation practice

    2. You have attended a 5+ day silent meditation retreat

    Meditation Practice Prerequisite

    If you do not presently have 1 year of previous mindfulness-based meditation practice you must be willing to: complete a meditation practice plan leading up to the program start date or during your training. Please see FAQ’s for further details.

    5+ Day Silent Meditation Retreat Prerequisite

    If you have not previously attended a 5+day silent meditation retreat to graduate the program, you must commit to:

    Attend and participate in silent retreat practice before the end of your training. Silent retreats can be completed in person or online and in smaller increments to total 5 days. Retreat attendance is recommended through an approved list of retreat centers. Please see FAQs for more details.

  • Yes, the MMTT is an online teacher training certification program that has participants from around the world.

  • Yes, the monthly trainings are mandatory to attend for certification. You can miss up to 2 monthly trainings to complete the program. If a training is missed, you can watch the replay and submit a written summary to make up that month’s training session.

  • Yes, every Daylong Training and Group Mentoring session is recorded and posted in your Training Home Page within 72 hours. The MMTT is operated through an online learning portal which hosts all of your training materials, monthly assignments, training replays and a live community member feed to ask questions and stay connected with your fellow cohort members.

  • No. You can still apply if you are committed to completing the prerequisites during the training.

  • Each trainee will determine their own commitment based on their working style and self-study schedule. Expect monthly reading assignments, written assignments, a group mentoring session, a monthly meeting with your small mindfulness pod, weekly attendance for the 1-hour sitting group on The Modern Medi Club (min. two weeks/month), plus daily meditation practice. Overall, you can plan for 2-3 hours per week for your self-study and practice.

  • Yes! This in-depth training is a strong complement for already trained facilitators. You will deepen your mindfulness studies, learn advanced facilitation techniques and spend a large part of the program refining your meditation offering. Plus, Amanda will be offering her experiences, techniques and insights for building a successful meditation business.

  • Upon successful completion of the program requirements and prerequisites, you will receive a document of completion and a Modern Meditation Teacher Certification. You will be able to use the title “Certified Modern Meditation Teacher.”

  • Certified Meditation Teachers have a breadth of professional opportunities available to them in today’s modern world, including:

    1. Building a career teaching classes, workshops and retreats online and in-person.

    2. Teaching in workplace settings to start-ups, Fortune 500 companies and non-profit organizations.

  • Our program is designed for today’s world. It is delivered LIVE, not prerecorded, and is available for replay and review for a lifetime. We share the latest peer-reviewed science, business models, technologies, and content strategies. Our faculty comes from top-accredited universities and research institutions. Unique among trainings of this kind, graduates can "sit in" on future MMTT classes for continued professional development and participate in the MMTT Graduate Community which hosts monthly mentoring sessions for graduates only. Most uniquely, we offer opportunities to start your teaching career via The Modern Medi Club online meditation studio. Plus, Amanda will be offering all of her personal tips, techniques and insights from her experience in business and teaching. Her MMTT curriculum and personalized approach to the MMTT has made it into a top industry meditation teacher training for secular settings and the modern world.

  • We are currently assessing which accreditation is the best fit for the MMTT. We do not believe that coaching accreditations are an appropriate match for a meditation teacher certification training.

  • We do not offer refunds. If circumstances change after enrollment and you cannot continue or complete the program, we will offer you a space in a future class for an administrative fee of $395.00.
